Recess at Pangani School

Pangini and Joska Schools

This video from another group shows the Panjani School in the Mathare Slum, which may be the school I work at since it goes up to grade 5. Joska is the other school where they take middle school students out of the slums. Some teachers from our trip will be working at this boarding school.

Leave the World A better than you found it!

"Leave the World a better than you found it!" Good advice from a Mathare youth.

Many youth groups in the slum communities of Nairobi, Kenya, run garbage collection services. Their goal is to create a clean and healthy environment for all -- and to uplift the youth.

The cost of things in Mathare

A short slide-show documentary showing how people live in the Mathare Valley slum of Nairobi, Kenya. It labels the cost of certain things in Mathare (rent for a house-yes, they pay to live in those shacks, kerosene for cooking, or a bath) as well as the human costs of living in this place.

Different Paths: George Obama

President Barrack Obama has a half-brother George who lives in the Huruma slums in Nairobi, Kenya. It is interesting the different paths that a life can take. He seems happy with his life and shares some of the features and mannerisms of his more famous sibling. I wonder what kind of future paths the children of the Mathare slums may take with a better education and the possibility of hope.

A Girl named Mercy from the Mathare Slums

Here is a video showing a resilient girl from the Mathare slums. It shows a bit of the slums, her school, her family, and inside a her home. The most important part, however, is the girl. From the description on Youtube.
This is about a 14-year-old girl I met when I went to visit Mercy Care Centre School in the Mathare slums of Nairobi. I was blown away by her strength and dignity that she displayed despite everything she had been through. She opened up my eyes to the huge resilience, awesome potential and amazing attitudes of the children in Africa. I am tired of the 'poor' being portrayed as weak and helpless. The children I met were so strong and they had great dreams ahead of them. They are amazing people who deserve every right that anyone else has across the world. Mercy Care Centre School is providing opportunities for these children to overcome poverty and become tomorrow's leaders."
